A super-stylish and robust all-terrain pushchair designed for life on the go
Here’s Bournemouth Baby Centre's honest review of the Silver Cross Pioneer Special Edition Henley pram.
The Pioneer Special Edition - Henley features a seat unit, (which can be used forward, or rear-facing) and carrycot, making it suitable from birth. Some nice extras include a footmuff, cup holder, fitted rain cover, luxury seat liner and stylish changing bag. (Adapters for the car seat are sold separately).
Price: £625 (including the Silver Cross 3 Year Guarantee)
After unboxing the Silver Cross Pioneer Henley you can’t help but be impressed by its lightweight mirror finished aluminium chassis. The plastic is matt black and once the seat is attached it oozes style and class. It features a beautiful leatherette and chrome detailed handle, which can be adjusted to four different positions by simply pulling the button in the centre of the handle in, and then sliding it to your desired height.
One of the big advantages of this pushchair is the four-way suspension. We tested the Pioneer Henley in The New Forest on bumpy terrain and it handled brilliantly. It’s easy to steer and turn, making it ideal for walks in the countryside but also navigating busy city streets and shopping centres. So whether you live in the city or countryside, you won’t be disappointed with the maneuverability of the Silver Cross Pioneer Henley. The ease of movement is down to its puncture-proof large back rear wheels (featuring the Silver Cross logo) and the reasonably sized front wheels, which can be easily locked, ideal for if you’re using the pushchair on uneven terrain. Simply flick the clips above the front wheels. The wheels can also be easily removed, should you need to clean them, or require a bit more space in the boot.
Another big plus is the generously sized basket, perfect for a trip to the countryside (you can easily fit a blanket, cool bag and jumpers), or a trip to the shops (we think you could fit at least four shopping bags). With the pushchair attached it’s much easier to access the basket. With the carrycot it’s a bit more tricky as you need to pull it down slightly to get things in and out, which is a little frustrating if you’re trying to access things in a hurry.
The seat is made with luxurious fabrics and really does look classy. It can be used from 6 months, parent-facing or forward-facing. The elevated seating position will give your little one the best view to take everything in. There are three different back rest positions and an adjustable footrest. The seat can be reclined easily with one hand. If your toddler needs a nap the lowest position is ideal for this. The seat features a 5 point harness and you can adjust the straps depending on the height of your child. This is a little tricky, so best take a look and get it in the right position before you leave the house.
It’s also really easy to attach the hood and when in place, it can be moved into three different positions. For hot, summer days there is a pop-out sun shield and the fabric is UPF50+.
The seat has a bumper bar, which can be easily removed with one hand, making it easy to get an uncooperative toddler in and out.
The seat liner fabric is very luxurious and super-soft to touch, almost like sheepskin. It will certainly keep your little one cosy and snug. The only issue is being cream, it will easily show any marks, so if you are using it for countryside adventures you may want to remove your child’s shoes before putting them back into the seat. The fabric can be easily cleaned if not.
The Silver Cross Pioneer Special Edition - Henley also includes a cosy footmuff - the perfect accessory for colder days. It’s easy to fit and the outer fabric is water resistant. On warmer days you can choose to remove the footmuff, or leave it unzipped.
The rain cover fits easily onto the seat unit and it is made from ventilated material.
The carrycot, like the seat unit, features very stylish matching fabric. It is suitable from birth and is well ventilated, which means it is suitable for overnight sleeping, making it ideal for weekends away. You can fit the bumper bar to the carrycot making it easier to lift off the chassis if your baby is asleep. The carrycot is a decent size, so it should easily fit your baby up to 6 months old and potentially longer for smaller infants.
We were very impressed with the deep-padded mattress, which is so lovely and soft we wished we were small enough to cosy up in it! It really does provide a lovely environment for your baby to sleep in. The carrycot uses the same hood as the seat unit, so can be used in three different positions, providing great protection for a sleeping baby, with the UPF50+ sun protection for extra peace of mind.
The carrycot also has feet offering extra protection, so you don’t have to worry about it getting dirty or damaged when putting it down.
You can buy car seat adapters for the Pioneer Henley, turning it into a Travel System, but these are sold separately.
You don’t have to remove the seat to fold the pushchair, but you do need to ensure it’s in the forward-facing and most upright position. However, with the seat attached it’s not the most compact of folds, so we recommend removing the seat first, which is very easy to do. Simply pull the levers on the sides outwards and then lift upwards to remove the seat from the frame (it’s the same instructions for removing the carrycot too). With the seat removed you will be able to get the frame a lot flatter, which makes getting it in and out of the car a lot easier, and also allows you to get more into the boot - useful if you are packing for a day out, or trip away. It’s super easy to fold the pushchair, simply pull the triggers upwards and the handle will go towards the floor before it all locks into place.
A lovely extra feature of the Henley Special Edition is the fact that it comes with a changing bag. The straps and bottom of the changing bag match the leatherette handle, so it really does finish off the stylish look and feel of the pram. The changing bag can be attached easily to the handle via velcro straps. It comes with a shoulder strap too, which can be clipped on, should you wish to wear it over your shoulder, instead of fixing it to the pram. We personally prefer using the shoulder strap as sometimes it can get in the way when pushing if you keep it attached. The bag also comes with a handy, fold-up changing mat and a thermal bottle holder. There is a designated pocket in the bag for your mobile phone, as well as a zip up compartment ideal for personal items. It’s a generously sized bag and you can easily fit a change of clothes for your baby, bottle, nappies, soother, baby wipes, muslin and the included changing mat.
We loved testing the The Silver Cross Pioneer Special Edition Henley. The main plus points for us were how easy it is to push, it’s luxurious fabrics and large basket. If you are looking for a pushchair that’s robust, yet stylish, then this is definitely a great choice. It fared well on bumpy terrain thanks to the puncture-proof, treaded tyres, making it perfect for outdoor family adventures. Our only negatives are the fact that accessing the basket is tricky when the carrycot is attached and that being robust, it is quite bulky, so navigating narrow aisles in shops may be tricky.
